Located on the corner of Kerk and Joubert in Standerton, Heritage House project revisits a historic Cape Dutch style home, blending preservation with thoughtful enhancements. This project aims to respect and highlight the original architectural elements, such as the distinctive columns and unique gables, while improving the home's functionality and comfort.
The original structure provided minimal heat gain, which is a significant concern given Standerton's cold climate. To address this, the new living quarters, communal dining, kitchen, and living room are designed to maximize northern sunlight exposure. This not only enhances thermal comfort but also floods the interiors with natural light, creating warm and inviting spaces.
In all modifications, the original proportions and architectural intent of the house are meticulously adhered to, serving as the guiding principle for every decision. The material palette is deliberately subdued, ensuring that new additions do not detract from the historical character of the building.
Strategic interventions, such as selective roof openings, allow additional sunlight to penetrate deeper into the house. Moreover, glass walls are introduced to open up spaces, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors while maintaining the integrity of the heritage structure.
Heritage House project exemplifies a sensitive and harmonious integration of contemporary living needs with the rich architectural legacy of a Cape Dutch style home.
